Play and Chance: Experience European Contemporary Art at Schafhof
The exhibition Artists in Motion: Play and Chance transforms the Schafhof – European Art Forum Upper Bavaria in Freising into an open space for contemporary art. Seven artists from Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, and Scotland explore how chance, movement, improvisation, and awareness of rules shape creative processes.
When Uncertainty Becomes an Artistic Method
This year's theme leads directly into a central question of modern and contemporary art: How does a work change when planning collides with the unpredictable? The presented works understand chance not as a disturbance but as a productive impulse. In the contemplation of the works, control and openness, order and surprise, individual gesture and shared cultural dialogue meet.
Painting, Photography, Video and Installation
The exhibition combines painting, print graphics, photography, video, sculpture, interactive installations, and conceptual art. Alessandra Bisi, Inge Bos, Gerd Lepic, Michel di Maggio, Wim Scheere, Steve Schaub, and Uta Schnuppe Strack develop a polyphonic panorama of European contemporary art.
Diverse materials, forms, and visual languages create a varied exhibition atmosphere. Precisely set structures meet open compositions, static objects encounter dynamic or participative elements. Light, surface, scale, and spatial effects become essential components of the aesthetic experience.
European Exchange as Cultural Education
Artists in Motion sees itself as a trans-European space for the interdisciplinary collaboration of artists. The curation connects visual art with questions of European diversity, inclusion, social cohesion, and cultural responsibility.
Schafhof creates a special architectural framework for this purpose. The exhibition spaces and the café are accessible without steps. Accompanying programs and guided tours deepen the access to the artistic positions and make the exhibition an inspiring place for cultural education.
Visitor Information
The exhibition is on view from September 19 to November 29, 2026. Until October 31, opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 2 PM to 7 PM, as well as Sundays and holidays from 10 AM to 7 PM. Admission to the exhibition and accompanying programs is free.
