Artists in Motion: Play and Chance – European Contemporary Art at Schafhof

The exhibition Artists in Motion: Play and Chance invites you to a multi-voiced encounter with contemporary art at Schafhof – European Art Forum Upper Bavaria. Seven artists from Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, and Scotland dedicate themselves to the annual theme and examine how planning, movement, improvisation, and uncertainty shape creative processes.

When Chance Becomes an Artistic Method

At the center of the exhibition is a central question of modern and contemporary art: What happens when conscious design meets open processes? Chance does not appear merely as a disturbance, but as a productive impulse. Forms shift, pictorial spaces remain in motion, and materials develop unexpected relationships. Observing the works thus opens up a tension field between control, spontaneous decision, and aesthetic openness.

Painting, Photography, Video, and Installation in Dialogue

The curation combines painting, printmaking, photography, video, sculpture, interactive installation, sound art, and conceptual art. Alessandra Bisi presents a video work, Inge Bos and Gerd Lepic work in the medium of painting, Michel di Maggio focuses on photography. Steve Schaub develops installations, Wim Scheere connects conceptual art with objects, and Uta Schnuppe Strack shows prints and installations.

Color fields, graphic traces, photographic excerpts, moving images, and object-like placements create a varied exhibition atmosphere. Light, surface, scale, and spatial impact become important components of the aesthetic experience. Especially sculptures, installations, and media works vividly unfold their materiality in the immediate tour.

European Exchange as Cultural Education

Artists in Motion sees itself as a trans-European space for interdisciplinary collaboration among artists. The exhibition connects individual handwriting with questions of cultural diversity, inclusion, social cohesion, and European responsibility. Different backgrounds, media, and working methods enter into a productive dialogue.

The exhibition program of Schafhof makes the encounter with contemporary art a place of cultural education. Artist talks, lectures, workshops, and guided tours deepen access to the exhibited positions and invite visitors to explore the relationship between chance, rule, material, and perception themselves.

Visitor Information

The exhibition can be seen from September 19 to November 29, 2026, at Schafhof. On November 7, the opening hours are from 2 PM to 6 PM. Admission to the exhibition and accompanying programs is free. The exhibition rooms and the café are accessible without steps.

Conclusion: An Art Experience Between Order and Surprise

Artists in Motion: Play and Chance awaits art enthusiasts with a multifaceted connection of European exchange, experimental art, and interdisciplinary work observation. Anyone who wants to experience painting, photography, printmaking, video, sculpture, installation, and conceptual art in a common thematic framework should definitely visit the exhibition live. Its materiality, spatial impact, and exhibition atmosphere reveal themselves especially impressively in the immediate aesthetic experience.
