When chance becomes an artistic principle

The exhibition Artists in Motion: Play and Chance transforms the Schafhof in Freising into a European resonance space for contemporary art. From September 19 to November 29, 2026, seven artists from Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, and Scotland will come together. Their works explore how new images, forms, and meanings arise from movement, uncertainty, and playful decisions.

A European dialogue in many media

Artists in Motion stands for interdisciplinary collaboration among artists from various fields of visual arts, music, literature, as well as applied and performing arts. The exhibition combines painting, printmaking, photography, video, sculpture, interactive installation, and conceptual art into a multi-voiced panorama of current artistic directions.

Participants include Alessandra Bisi from Italy, Inge Bos from Scotland, Gerd Lepic and Steve Schaub from Germany, Michel di Maggio from France, as well as Wim Scheere from Belgium and Uta Schnuppe Strack. Each position approaches the annual theme in its own way and makes visible how differently artists work with chance, rules, movement, and decisions.

Play and chance as an aesthetic experience

In the consideration of the works, chance is not experienced as a mere disturbance, but as a productive artistic method. Compositional orders can shift, materials react to each other, and interactive installations involve the exhibition visitor directly. Colors, surfaces, light and spatial effects create a sensual exhibition atmosphere in which observation and discovery are closely intertwined.

The curation focuses on the cultural diversity of Europe and on the question of how art can promote social cohesion, inclusion, and respect. Thus, an exhibition space is created that not only presents contemporary art but also enables cultural education and invites critical discourse on European issues.

The Schafhof as a special exhibition venue

The historic Schafhof is situated on a hill at the outskirts of Freising and combines extraordinary architecture with nature and contemporary art. The former agricultural spaces provide a distinctive architectural backdrop for the various media and materials. The sculpture garden also extends the art experience to an outdoor space where artistic interventions, sculptures, and installations relate to the landscape.

The exhibition and its accompanying programs are free of charge. The exhibition spaces and café are accessible without steps. In November, opening hours are from Wednesday to Saturday from 2 to 6 PM and on Sundays and public holidays from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Conclusion: Contemporary art between order and openness

Artists in Motion: Play and Chance promises a multifaceted artistic experience between painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and conceptual art. Those who want to experience how uncertainty shapes design, how movement brings meaning, and how international collaboration creates a European art dialogue should visit the exhibition live. The immediate consideration of the works makes materiality, spatial effects, and aesthetic experience especially intensively tangible.
