When children's rights come to life: Graffiti art in the Freising City Library
From September 8 to October 17, 2026, the Freising City Library will transform into a vibrant exhibition space. The exhibition Creatives for Children's Rights showcases numerous graffiti artworks created by aspiring educators from the Academy for Social Pedagogy as part of a workshop with the artist Oliver Skarvan on canvas.
Color as a language of participation
Bright colors, striking shapes, and an expressive visual language translate central children’s rights into immediately tangible motifs. Participation, equal opportunities, and intercultural coexistence gain a visible presence that invites focused viewing and open conversation. The graffiti works connect contemporary art with social pedagogical practice and cultural education.
Street art meets educational responsibility
The seminar behind this initiative focused on how children's rights become palpable in the everyday lives of children and young people. The aspiring educators engaged intensely with these themes and then translated their insights into colorful, meaningful compositions. The canvas serves as a projection surface for participation, fairness, and respectful coexistence.
Graffiti among books and shelves
The exhibition atmosphere arises from the appealing contrast between the quiet character of the library and the visual energy of graffiti art. Amidst books and shelves, the vibrant canvases create a unique spatial impact. The aesthetic experience provides families, young people, educational professionals, and art enthusiasts with an accessible entry point to socially engaged art.
A collaborative project for children's rights
The course Implementing Children's Rights Locally – Intercultural – Participatory – Interactive was initiated by social pedagogue Meral Meindl. Art educator Elfriede Schober-Schröger took over the management. The materials for the artwork were funded through the state initiative Green for Children and the Vocational School Center. Thus, the exhibition merges artistic practice, training, participation, and democratic responsibility.
Opening hours and visit
The exhibition is accessible during the opening hours of the city library: Tuesdays from 10 AM to 7 PM, Wednesdays to Fridays from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM. On Friday, October 2, 2026, the library will be open until 8:30 PM in celebration of the Long Night of Democracy. Admission is free.
Conclusion: Experience children's rights in color
Creatives for Children's Rights makes social issues visible in images, shapes, and colors. Visitors can expect an inspiring art experience between graffiti, painting, cultural education, and democratic responsibility. Those who wish to understand children's rights not just as an abstract concept but to experience them in an aesthetic way should definitely visit this exhibition at the Freising City Library.
