Between Reality and Dream: Lars Herrmann's Splinters and Shards in Freising

With the exhibition Splinters and Shards, the city library of Freising presents from October 24 to November 28, 2026, an impressive cross-section of the nearly twenty-year oeuvre of the Freising artist Lars Herrmann. At the center is drawing with a ballpoint pen – an everyday writing instrument that Herrmann transforms into a precise and unusually expressive artistic tool.

A Ballpoint Pen as a Tool of Depth

Lars Herrmann works with various printing and line techniques. From finely placed lines, densifications, and hatching arise image spaces of remarkable depth and intensity. The black or colored trace of the ballpoint pen develops its own materiality: it appears simultaneously immediate, controlled, and surprisingly nuanced.

The examination of the works provides insights into a drawing craft that combines nature study, observation, and imaginative image creation. Landscapes, figures, and architectural elements do not appear as mere representations of the visible world, but as starting points for inner spaces and poetic transformations.

Surrealism, Realism, and Fantasy

The exhibition unites influences from surrealism, realism, and fantasy. Familiar motifs meet enigmatic scenes, unusual perspectives, and fantastic landscapes. This creates a visual language between precise observation and dreamlike distortion.

Literary worlds, including the tales of H. P. Lovecraft and J. R. R. Tolkien, have also left their mark on Herrmann's works. At the same time, his gaze focuses on Freising and his own surroundings. The result is a personal universe where regional perception, cultural memory, and fantastic imagination interweave.

A Cross-section of Two Decades

The retrospective provides insight into about twenty years of artistic development and also shows works that have not been publicly displayed in Freising before. Around 200 works are already in private collections. Herrmann's drawings thus stand for a continuous engagement with line, the human inner world, and the transitions between reality and imagination.

In the light-filled city library, a special exhibition atmosphere emerges: Between books and quiet reading spots, visitors encounter art that requires concentration while also leaving room for personal thoughts. The aesthetic experience unfolds in the calm contemplation of forms, hatching, contrasts, and enigmatic image motifs.

Vernissage and Visit

The vernissage will take place on Friday, October 23, 2026, at 6:30 PM in the city library of Freising. The exhibition will be opened by art historian Dr. Veronika Winkler. During the exhibition period, the presentation can be visited during the opening hours of the city library: Tuesdays from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Wednesdays to Fridays from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Admission is free. The exhibition is suitable for art enthusiasts, friends of contemporary drawing, and anyone who wishes to engage in focused contemplation of works between reality, fantasy, and surreal imagery.

Conclusion: Drawing as a Journey into Inner Image Spaces

Splinters and Shards promises an intense art experience with a distinctive, detailed visual language. Lars Herrmann shows what narrative power lies in the line and what poetic depth can be found in an apparently ordinary ballpoint pen. Anyone wanting to combine aesthetic experience, cultural education, and fantastic image worlds should discover this exhibition live at the city library of Freising.
