Splinters and Shards: Lars Herrmann's enigmatic visual worlds in Freising
The city library of Freising presents Splinters and Shards, an impressive overview of nearly two decades in the work of the Freising artist Lars Herrmann. From October 24 to November 28, 2026, visitors will encounter drawings that unfold their own poetic tension between reality, fantasy, and surrealism. Admission is free.
The ballpoint pen as an artistic tool
At the heart of the exhibition is Herrmann's characteristic work with the ballpoint pen. Through varying pressure, fine hatching, and precise line techniques, bright transitions, deep shadows, and an astonishing spatial intensity emerge. The everyday writing instrument transforms into a tool of nuanced drawing and gives the works a distinctive materiality.
Between reality, fantasy, and surrealism
Herrmann's visual language combines elements of realism with surreal shifts and fantastical motifs. Enigmatic scenarios, unusual perspectives, and dreamlike landscapes open visual spaces that appear familiar while simultaneously eluding any definitive explanation. The contemplation of the works thus becomes an aesthetic experience, where personal memories, literary associations, and individual interpretations gain space.
Insights into about 20 years of artistic work
The exhibition brings together works from a period of approximately 2008 to 2026 and also showcases pieces that have not been publicly displayed in Freising before. Literary worlds from H. P. Lovecraft and J. R. R. Tolkien have also left their mark, as has the unique atmosphere of the cathedral city. Around 200 works by the artist are already in private collections.
Art history meets personal imagination
Lars Herrmann was born in 1968 in Olbernhau, studied art history, and has been working as a freelance artist since 2003. His drawings navigate between magical realism, fantasy, and surreal visual interpretations. The exhibition makes visible how precise observation, art historical knowledge, and internal visual worlds create an independent contemporary art direction.
Vernissage and visiting hours
The exhibition was opened on October 23, 2026, at 6:30 PM by art historian Dr. Veronika Winkler. The exhibition is accessible during the opening hours of the city library: Tuesdays from 10 AM to 7 PM, Wednesdays to Fridays from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.
A visit to Splinters and Shards promises a concentrated art experience between line, light, shadow, and narrative openness. Those who appreciate contemporary drawing, regional art, and mysterious visual spaces will discover an exhibition in the city library of Freising that invites reflection, contemplation, and repeated observation.
