“Splinters and Shards”: Mysterious Image Worlds from the Ballpoint Pen
The exhibition “Splinters and Shards” presents from October 24 to November 28, 2026, at the Freising City Library an impressive cross-section of the long-term work of Freising artist Lars Herrmann. The exhibition connects contemporary drawing with surreal, realistic, and fantastic image worlds and invites focused contemplation of the works.
An Unusual Tool with Great Expressiveness
At the center is the ballpoint pen, which Lars Herrmann uses as an independent artistic medium. With finely differentiated lines, varying pressure, and precise hatching, bright hairlines as well as deep black shadows emerge. From the everyday writing instrument, a technique of exceptional depth, intensity, and poetic effect develops.
The drawings show how nuanced monochrome and colored line work can be. Each layer expands the spatial effect of the composition: shapes emerge, blur, or transform into dreamlike transitions. The atmosphere of the exhibition thrives on this tension between controlled precision and open, associative image space.
Between Realism, Fantasy, and Surrealism
Herrmann's works navigate between precise observation and inner imagination. Realistic elements meet fantastic landscapes, unusual perspectives, and enigmatic scenes. Influences of surrealism and fantasy combine with an independent visual language that transforms familiar motifs into new contexts of meaning.
The retrospective provides insight into around two decades of artistic work. Literary worlds from H. P. Lovecraft and J. R. R. Tolkien, as well as personal views of the cathedral city of Freising, have left traces in Herrmann's work. Around 200 of his works are already in private collections; for this exhibition, works that have not been publicly shown in Freising were also selected.
Aesthetic Experience and Cultural Education
The exhibition opens a quiet space for aesthetic experience. Visitors can observe how bodies, landscapes, and imaginary spaces emerge from lines. The drawings do not demand a definitive interpretation but encourage a personal approach: what initially appears as a realistic depiction can reveal itself in the next moment as an inner landscape or fantastic vision.
Lars Herrmann was born in the Erzgebirge Mountains, studied art history, and has been working as a freelance artist in Freising since 2017. In addition to his own artistic activity, he curates exhibitions for the Freisinger Mohr Art Association. His works have been shown in museums, galleries, and exhibition spaces both domestically and internationally and have been honored with numerous awards and nominations.
Opening and Visiting
The opening will take place on Friday, October 23, 2026, at 6:30 PM at the Freising City Library. The exhibition will be opened by the art historian Dr. Veronika Winkler. During the run of the exhibition, “Splinters and Shards” is accessible during the opening hours of the city library: Tuesdays from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Wednesdays to Fridays from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Admission is free.
Conclusion: Drawing as a Journey into Inner Spaces
“Splinters and Shards” promises a concentrated artistic experience between reality, fantasy, and surreal imagination. The exhibition makes visible the poetic power that a seemingly simple ballpoint drawing can possess. Art enthusiasts should take the opportunity to discover Lars Herrmann's detailed image worlds live and engage in a multifaceted contemplation of works at the Freising City Library.
