Splinters and Shards: Mysterious Image Worlds by Lars Herrmann

The city library of Freising will transform from October 24 to November 28, 2026, into a quiet resonance space for the drawings of Freising artist Lars Herrmann. The exhibition showcases a cross section of around two decades of artistic work and invites a concentrated study of the artwork between reality, fantasy, and surrealism.

The Ballpoint Pen as a Precise Drawing Instrument

At the center is Herrmann's unusual technique: with ordinary ballpoint pens, he develops finest hairlines, light hatching, and deep black shadows. Changing pressure and differentiated line work create an extraordinary spatial depth and poetic intensity. The everyday writing instrument becomes a tool for detailed painting on paper and a distinctive contemporary drawing.

Between Realism, Surrealism, and Fantasy

Herrmann's imagery moves between precise observations of nature, dream-like scenarios, and fantastical landscapes. Familiar views of the cathedral city of Freising encounter unusual perspectives, literary echoes, and mysterious inner worlds. Influences of surrealism, realism, and fantastic art merge into a distinct art form that opens space for personal interpretations.

Twenty Years of Artistic Development

The exhibition brings together works from the period of 2008 to 2026, including pieces that have not yet been publicly displayed in Freising. Around 200 drawings are already in private collections. Herrmann, born in 1968 in the Ore Mountains, studied art history and has been working as a freelance artist in Freising since 2017. His drawing skills developed from early nature studies and a long engagement with landscape, figure, face, and human inner world.

An Aesthetic Experience Between Image and Literature

In the exhibition atmosphere of the city library, a special dialogue emerges between art and literature. Among books and reading areas, the drawings unfold their quiet, intense effect. Bright lines, dense hatching, and dark image zones lead into mysterious image spaces that reveal themselves only upon closer inspection. The art experience connects cultural education, visual analysis, and personal imagination.

Opening and Visit

The opening will take place on October 23, 2026, at 18:30. The art historian Dr. Veronika Winkler will inaugurate the exhibition. Splinters and Shards can be seen during the opening hours of the city library: Tuesdays from 10 am to 7 pm, Wednesdays to Fridays from 10 am to 6 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. Admission is free.

Conclusion: Drawing as a Journey into Inner Image Spaces

Visitors can expect an intense art experience between precision, memory, dream, and fantasy. Lars Herrmann demonstrates how a common ballpoint pen can create multifaceted image spaces with great atmospheric density. Anyone who appreciates contemporary drawing, regional art, and poetic image worlds should definitely experience this exhibition live at the Freising city library.
