„Splinters and Shards“: Mysterious Image Worlds from the Ballpoint Pen

The City Library of Freising presents the exhibition „Splinters and Shards“ by the Freising artist Lars Herrmann from October 24 to November 28, 2026. The showcased cross-section from around two decades opens an intense access to an independent visual language between reality, fantasy, and surrealism.

When Lines Create Dreamlike Spaces

At the center of Lars Herrmann's work is drawing with the ballpoint pen. With finely differentiated strokes, varying pressure, and dense hatching, the artist develops bright hairlines as well as deep black shadows. From an everyday writing instrument, works of exceptional depth, poetic intensity, and almost plastic spatial effect emerge.

Between Realism, Fantasy, and Surrealism

Herrmann's image worlds combine precise observation with enigmatic scenarios. Familiar landscapes, figures, and motifs meet fantastical elements, unusual perspectives, and surreal shifts. Influences from realism, fantasy, and surrealism shape the exhibition without confining the works to a single art movement.

A Cross-Section from Around Twenty Years

The exhibition provides insight into a long artistic development from 2008 to 2026. In addition to already known works, there are also pieces that have not yet been publicly presented in Freising. Literary sources of inspiration such as H. P. Lovecraft and J. R. R. Tolkien resonate alongside personal views of the cathedral city and impressions from nature.

Artistic Expertise and Cultural Context

Lars Herrmann, born in 1968 in the Ore Mountains, studied art history and has been working as a freelance artist since 2004. He has been living and working in Freising since 2017. His works have been shown in museums, galleries, and exhibition spaces both domestically and abroad; around 200 pieces are in private collections. The exhibition thus connects personal examination of works, art historical classification, and regional cultural history.

Vernissage and Exhibition Opening

The vernissage will take place on Friday, October 23, 2026, at 6:30 PM at the City Library of Freising. The exhibition will be opened by art historian Dr. Veronika Winkler. During the exhibition period, it will be accessible during the opening hours of the City Library: Tuesday from 10 AM to 7 PM, Wednesday to Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Conclusion: Drawings that Resonate Long After

„Splinters and Shards“ invites a concentrated aesthetic experience. The exhibition atmosphere arises from fine lines, dark contrasts, poetic landscapes, and open image spaces that stimulate personal interpretations. Those who wish to discover contemporary drawing, fantastic art, and regional artistic personalities will experience a multifaceted art encounter at the City Library of Freising. Admission is free – a visit is definitely worthwhile.
