Between Paper and Steel: Reinhard Wöllmer's Poetic Material Art in Freising

The exhibition Reinhard Wöllmer – Paper Objects and Steel Sculptures at galerie 13 is dedicated to a multifaceted work that exists between strict construction, structural abstraction and playful poetry. From September 22 to November 7, 2026, the Freising gallery transforms into a space for a concentrated examination of works, where paper, steel, light, and shadow create an intense aesthetic experience.

Paper Becomes a Sculptural Body

Reinhard Wöllmer liberates paper from its familiar flat function. Plastic objects arise from colored papier-mâché, which gain an independent spatial presence through convex and concave curvatures, relief-like surfaces, and precisely set roundings. The artist predominantly works with rolled paper forms using a hammer, almost like a blacksmith.

Especially the circular motif shapes Wöllmer's language of forms. Circle and ring objects combine geometric clarity with an organic appearance. In the examination of the works, it becomes evident how material structure, color, and shadow alter perception. The fragile raw material appears powerful, corporeal, and surprisingly durable.

Strict Construction and Playful Poetry

Wöllmer's art moves in the tension field of order and openness. The geometric basic forms follow a precise composition while preserving a poetic mobility. Surfaces become volumes, lines transform into spatial edges, and color becomes a physical event.

The exhibition atmosphere thrives on this balance: Paper objects seem light yet massive, while steel sculptures impart stability, weight, and architectural tension to the space. The art experience arises from the interplay of proximity and distance, surface and depth, silence and formal energy.

Biography and Art Historical Context

Reinhard Wöllmer was born in 1957 in Nuremberg. After training as a decorator and visual merchandiser, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg from 1977 to 1984 under Clemens Fischer, of whom he became a master pupil. Craftsmanship and painterly thinking merge in his work to form an independent position between object art, geometric abstraction, and sculptural color design.

Wöllmer received, among other awards, a scholarship from the city of Nuremberg for Skopje, the Hollfeld Art Prize, and the Art Prize of the Spirale Treuchtlingen Art Association. His works are part of public collections and have been realized multiple times in public spaces. From 2002 to 2022, he worked as a design lecturer at the Werkbund Workshop Nuremberg.

Visit and Opening Hours

The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Saturday at different times: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2 to 6:30 PM, Thursday from 2 to 8:30 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM. Visits are also possible by appointment. On Sunday, October 11, 2026, galerie 13 invites you from 2 to 6 PM for a gallery tour with Reinhard Wöllmer.

Conclusion: The exhibition offers a concentrated art experience for all who wish to directly encounter contemporary sculpture, object art, and poetic material aesthetics. Those who want to experience paper as a sculptural body and steel as a sensitive carrier of space should view Wöllmer's works live at galerie 13.
