Between Paper and Steel: Reinhard Wöllmer's Poetic Material Art in Freising

The exhibition Reinhard Wöllmer – Paper Objects and Steel Sculptures at galerie 13 is dedicated to a multifaceted oeuvre between strict construction, structural abstraction, and playful poetry. From September 22 to November 7, 2026, the Freising gallery transforms into a concentrated perceptual space where paper, steel, surface, and space enter into a tense dialogue.

Paper Becomes a Sculptural Body

Reinhard Wöllmer contradicts any notion of paper as merely a fragile image carrier. His paper objects are made from colored papier-mâché, which the artist processes plastically with great craftsmanship. Rolled-out paper is transformed into convex-concave shapes with a hammer. From the seemingly light material, independent sculptural bodies with a distinctive surface and physical presence develop.

Circle, Construction, and Poetic Openness

The circle motif shapes Wöllmer's language of forms. Discs, curves, and arched surfaces combine geometric clarity with an almost organic aesthetic. His art thus moves in the tension field of concrete abstraction, object art, and contemporary material aesthetics. The strict form remains open for associations: it evokes movement, rhythm, growth, and cosmic order.

Steel as a Counterpoint to Paper Sculpture

The paper objects are contrasted by steel sculptures, whose weight and constructive stability define the space. Paper appears as a malleable, tactile skin, steel as a resistant, architectural body. In the exhibition atmosphere of galerie 13, this creates a finely balanced interplay of lightness and heaviness, surface and volume, light and shadow.

Artistic Biography and Art Historical Context

Reinhard Wöllmer was born in 1957 in Nuremberg. After training as a decorator and display designer, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg from 1977 to 1984 under Clemens Fischer, becoming his master student. A scholarship from the city of Nuremberg took him to Skopje. His awards include the Hollfeld Art Prize and the Art Prize of the Spirale Treuchtlingen Art Association. From 2002 to 2022, Wöllmer worked as a design lecturer at the Werkbund Workshop in Nuremberg.

Art Examination as an Aesthetic Experience

The curation focuses on concentration and immediate perception. Contour, surface, material tension, and spatial depth unfold step by step. This art experience invites one to slow down seeing and to comprehend the craftsmanship processes behind the sculptures. It is precisely in the connection of cultural education and sensory experience that the special quality of this exhibition lies.

Visit and Opening Hours

The exhibition is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 2 PM to 6:30 PM, Thursdays from 2 PM to 8:30 PM, and Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM. Visits are additionally possible by appointment. Admission is free. On Sunday, October 11, 2026, a gallery tour with Reinhard Wöllmer will take place from 2 PM to 6 PM.

Conclusion: A Quiet Art with Great Presence

Reinhard Wöllmer's paper objects and steel sculptures demonstrate how an intense aesthetic experience arises from material, handwork, and geometric reduction. Art enthusiasts can expect a concentrated art experience with sensory materiality, precise language of forms, and art historical connections. Anyone who wants to experience contemporary sculpture, object art, and poetic material aesthetics firsthand should definitely visit this exhibition live at galerie 13.
