When paper conquers space and steel becomes poetic

The exhibition Reinhard Wöllmer – Paper Objects and Steel Sculptures at galerie 13 Freising opens a concentrated view of a multifaceted artistic oeuvre between strict construction, structural abstraction, and playful poetry. Until November 7, 2026, paper, steel, surface, and space come together in an intense exhibition atmosphere.

Paper as a sculptural body

Reinhard Wöllmer contradicts the notion of paper as a fragile image carrier. His paper objects are created from dyed papier-mâché, which the artist rolls into disks and then primarily works with a hammer. Through this sculptural process, convex-concave forms with precise contours, sensual surfaces, and surprising spatial presence develop.

Circle, construction, and poetic openness

The motif of the circle occupies a central position in Wöllmer's work. Curves, disks, and arched surfaces combine geometric clarity with an almost organic effect. The works are situated in the realm of constructive art and geometric abstraction. Order meets movement, lightness meets weight, surface becomes space.

Steel as a spatial counterforce

The paper objects are contrasted by steel sculptures with constructive presence. The metal gives the exhibition space a clear, architectural tension, while the paper stands for colorfulness, transformation, and tactile refinement. In the contemplation of the works, material processes, light, shadow, contour, and spatial effects become perceptible step by step.

Artistic biography and art-historical classification

Reinhard Wöllmer was born in 1957 in Nuremberg and studied from 1977 to 1984 at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg under Clemens Fischer, of whom he was a master student. A foreign scholarship from the city of Nuremberg took him to Skopje. Wöllmer received, among other awards, the Hollfeld Art Prize, the Bavarian Debutant Promotion Prize for artists and publicists, as well as the Art Prize of the Art Association Spirale Treuchtlingen. His works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and are part of public collections.
