Rescued Masterpieces from the Italian Marche at DIMU

The special exhibition S.O.S. – Save our Souls at the Diocesan Museum of Freising tells of art between catastrophe, preservation, and hope. Precious works from the Italian Marche, salvaged, secured, and restored after the severe earthquakes in 2016 from destroyed churches, are on display.

Art History between Late Gothic and Renaissance

The focus is on significant works from the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods, including multi-panel altarpieces by Carlo Crivelli and Lorenzo Lotto. The exhibition leads into an era where religious imagery, precious materials, and nuanced color compositions allowed for an intense aesthetic experience.

There are also works by Vittore Crivelli, Allegretto Nuzi, Paolo da Visso, Pietro Alemanno, Marco Palmezzano, and Cola dell’Amatrice. The selected paintings and altarpieces reveal the stylistic diversity of the art landscape between the Sibillin Mountains and the Adriatic coast.

When Restoration Becomes Cultural Salvation

The examination of the works combines art historical expertise with the history of their rescue. After the earthquake, artworks from hundreds of damaged churches were systematically salvaged, centrally secured, cataloged, and restored with public and European support. Each painting and sculpture thus also carries the memory of places, communities, and religious traditions.

The exhibition makes visible how closely art, faith, and social memory are intertwined. Cracks, losses, and restored surfaces point to the vulnerability of cultural heritage and at the same time to the responsibility of monument preservation, restoration, and art education.

A Sensory Exhibition Atmosphere

Golden backgrounds, finely modeled faces, ornamental details, and the spatial effect of multi-part altarpieces shape the art experience. The sacred imagery of the works meets a modern exhibition curation that emphasizes not only mastery and art history but also the adventurous journey of the artworks to the center.

This results in an exhibition that presents historical painting not as a distant heritage, but as a living question for the present: We rescue art – does art save us? Cultural education, art historical context, and immediate aesthetic experience intertwine.

The exhibition can be seen from October 20, 2026, to April 4, 2027, at the Diocesan Museum of Freising.
