Saved Masterpieces from the Italian Marche in DIMU

The Diocesan Museum Freising presents S.O.S. – Save our souls, an extraordinary exhibition about destruction, preservation, and the unwavering power of cultural memory. From October 20, 2026, to April 4, 2027, visitors will encounter precious artworks from the Italian Marche, salvaged from destroyed churches after severe earthquakes, restored, and preserved for the public.

Art from the Ruins of a Shaken Landscape

The Italian Marche were struck by severe earthquakes in 2016. Over 300 people lost their lives, churches and entire towns were devastated. Amid this catastrophe, a systematic rescue of sacred art began. The exhibition illustrates how closely artworks are connected to religious practice, regional identity, and the cultural memory of a society.

Late Gothic and Renaissance in Focused Observation

At the center are significant works from the Late Gothic and Renaissance. Multi-paneled altars and outstanding panel paintings by masters like Carlo Crivelli and Lorenzo Lotto offer a striking glimpse into Italian painting of the 15th and 16th centuries. Gilded surfaces, intense coloration, finely modeled figures, and the complex staging of sacred scenes create a special spatial effect in the museum.

Between Beauty, Loss, and Responsibility

The exhibition connects art historical expertise with an existential question: Why do people rescue art even under the greatest danger? The restored works appear not only as aesthetically valuable objects but also as testimonies of faith, hope, and social responsibility. Their visible traces of history deepen the aesthetic experience and draw attention to the importance of restoration and cultural heritage protection.

An Art Experience with Cultural Education

The curation invites a concentrated observation of the works. The Diocesan Museum creates a resonance space where art historical contextualization, religious imagery, and the adventurous history of recovery are interconnected. During the exhibition, a public tour takes place every Thursday from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Participation costs 5 euros plus museum admission; registration is required.

Exhibition Atmosphere on the Freising Cathedral Hill

The calm museum spaces allow the restored altars and paintings to resonate in an atmosphere of collection and attention. From Tuesday to Sunday, the museum is open from 9 AM to 5 PM. On Thursdays, the opening hours are extended during the exhibition until 8 PM. The museum is closed on Mondays. The museum is accessible without barriers; the Dombergbahn connects the city center barrier-free with the cathedral hill.

Conclusion: When Art Becomes a Lifeline

S.O.S. – Save our souls brings together masterpieces whose stories extend far beyond the boundaries of art history. The exhibition makes loss visible, honors the work of preservation, and opens a touching encounter with Late Gothic and Renaissance art. Anyone seeking cultural education, intensive work observation, and an art experience of great historical depth should definitely visit this exhibition live at the Diocesan Museum Freising.
