School makes democracy: Young perspectives on collaborative design
How is democracy visible in everyday school life? The exhibition of the Special Educational Support Center Freising invites you to explore this question through colorful posters and creative student works. At the vhs building at Kammergasse 12, democracy can be experienced as a lived experience, a learning process, and collaborative design.
Democracy begins in daily interactions
The exhibition focuses on the small, concrete situations in which a democratic attitude arises: respectful interaction, conversations among peers, common school rules, and the question of how each person can take responsibility. The presented works make it clear that political education does not start in parliaments, but already in the classroom, on the playground, and in common conversations.
Colorful posters as artistic statements
Under the guidance of Stephan Häberl, students engaged with democracy both content-wise and artistically. Large, colorful posters combine clear messages with an immediate visual language. One example is the rule I treat all things with care, which translates responsibility and consideration into a concise visual statement.
The works show an independent form of visual communication. Typography, color, space, and composition serve not only for design but become tools for cultural education. Thus, the examination of the works provides access to questions of participation, coexistence, and social responsibility.
School as a democratic learning space
The exhibition understands school as a small democratic space. The materials shown document how children and adolescents take up, discuss, and creatively develop societal issues. This also includes a fundraising run, whose design addresses the livelihood of children in Africa and expands the perspective beyond their own school, Freising, and Europe.
The posters originally presented in the school building in Pulling leave the familiar environment of the school community for this presentation for the first time. In the corridors of the first and second floors of the vhs Freising, an open exhibition atmosphere is created, where pedagogical project work, aesthetic experience, and social reflection come together immediately.
Cultural education with immediate impact
The Special Educational Support Center Freising stands for an educational practice that connects language, learning, and emotional and social development. The exhibition visibly continues this approach: students become observers, designers, and communicators of their own topics.
This creates an art experience that does not rely on distant observation but challenges one’s own stance. Colors, shapes, and brief messages have a direct impact and make complex questions accessible. The exhibition connects political education, social responsibility, inclusion, and creative design into an impressive presentation of young voices.
Conclusion: Experience democracy live
Visitors can expect an engaging, colorful exhibition about rules, respect, participation, and responsibility. School makes democracy – democracy makes school shows how lessons can transform into aesthetic experiences and creative work can lead to social participation. A visit to the vhs Freising enriches cultural education and opens new perspectives on democracy in everyday life.
