Special Exhibition: HEAVENLY REUNION. From Ludwig I. to the Blue Rider

Discover in our tour our large exhibition about the artistic developments in Munich in the 19th century and their influence on religious painting on the eve of modernity. Influenced by the great political and societal upheavals, from revolutionary changes to romantic longing, the art of the 19th century seeks a balance between nature and culture. The reorganization demands a changed type of artist and for the first time emancipated female artists who create their works for a free market. Ludwig I. shapes the first half of the century with his patronage and his taste in art. After that, the art unfolds in many directions: Late Nazarene, Realism, Naturalism, Impressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau and Expressionism, until the artist group of the Blue Rider pushes open the door to modernity. With more than 120 works from over 30 different museums and private collectors as well as works from its own collection, the Diocesan Museum offers an exciting insight into a great artistic epoch. Works on display include those by Friedrich Overbeck, Peter von Cornelius, Emilie Linder, Marie Ellenrieder, Max Emanuel Ainmiller, Johann von Schraudolph, Wilhelm von Kaulbach, Franz von Lenbach, Moritz von Schwind, Carl Spitzweg, Adolf Hölzel, Fritz von Uhde, Gabriel von Max, Franz von Stuck, Lovis Corinth, Karl Caspar, Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Gabriele Münter, Marianne von Werefkin, Heinrich Campendonk, Jan Verkade, Peter Lenz, Albert Weisgerber and Josef Eberz.
