Urban Wildlife in Winter in Freising: Research, Questions, and Bats

Urban Wildlife in Winter: Research Meets Evening Walk in Freising

How do wild animals survive the cold season, and what impact do milder winters have on their behavior in the city? On November 21, 2026, the curiocity Science Center in Freising invites you to a special event experience around urban ecology, climate change, and modern wildlife research.

Winter Strategies of Urban Wildlife

Prof. Dr. Tanja Straka, professor of natural space and wildlife management at the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University, will provide insights into the lives of wild animals in urban areas in a keynote speech. The focus will be on their strategies for the cold season and the question of how changing winter conditions affect activity, foraging, and retreat behavior.

Science Made Understandable and Accessible

The format combines solid research with direct exchange. After the lecture, there will be time for questions and a small Meet the Scientist. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about current findings on urban wildlife, climate change, and bat research firsthand. The organization within the framework of the Action Week University at Your Doorstep brings science right into the heart of Freising.

Outdoors with the Bat Detector

After the discussion, the event experience moves from the Science Center to the public space. During a 30-minute evening walk, participants will explore whether bats are still active in November using a bat detector. Whether animals can actually be heard or seen remains open, making the short outdoor appointment an exciting observation under real conditions. Weather-appropriate clothing is recommended for the walk.

For Families, Adults, and Nature Enthusiasts

The event is aimed at adults, families, and anyone interested in nature right outside their door. The atmosphere is enhanced by the shared discovery, inquiry, and attentive listening. This creates a lively connection of scientific context, regional environmental relevance, and a sensory evening atmosphere.

Conclusion: Experience Urban Ecology Live

The evening at the curiocity Science Center shows how much nature is hidden in urban areas. An understandable expert lecture, personal conversations, and the subsequent bat walk make the event a varied research experience. Those who want to better understand urban wildlife and discuss current climate issues directly with an expert will experience a special evening in Freising between science and nature.
