See, hear and experience Mary Magdalene anew
On Saturday, October 24, 2026, the parish church of St. George in Freising will transform into a space for an extraordinary image-sound-text performance. MARY MAGDALEN - Where do we hear her voice? approaches the biblical figure not through a linear narrative, but through image, sound, movement, and open perception.
A multifaceted figure at the center
Mary Magdalene is among the most fascinating figures of biblical tradition. For centuries, however, her image has been shaped by interpretations that portrayed her as a sinner, seductress, or projection of male notions. The performance questions the person behind these overformulations and opens an artistic space for new perspectives.
Translucent images and changing light
The painter Katharina Schellenberger has created three large-format images from translucent materials for the project. Freely hanging, semi-transparent papers react to the incidence of light, creating ever new, multivalent appearances of Mary Magdalene. The stage design remains in motion: contours dissolve, shapes emerge, and the theater atmosphere changes with each viewpoint.
Improvised sounds in the church space
The musician Masako Ohta encounters the images with the Indian harmonium. In a meditative sound improvisation, she draws inspiration from the artworks and her own approach to Mary Magdalene. Together with her instrument, she moves through the space. Acoustics, silence, and sound combine into a contemplative dramaturgy, where the focus is not on quick understanding, but on immediate experience.
The audience as part of the stage experience
Visitors are allowed to change their seats and experience the performance from different perspectives. This makes the church space itself the stage set and the audience an active part of the perception. The staging unfolds its effect less through classical acting than through presence, space, light, material, and sound.
Image, music, and text as open encounters
The conclusion is a text by the writer Augusta Laar. Her language complements the visual and musical layer with an additional voice. Thus, an interdisciplinary stage experience emerges between contemporary art, performance, music, and spiritual exploration.
Afterwards, there is an opportunity to talk with the artists about their artistic approaches, the creation of the images, and the ideas behind the sounds and texts.
Conclusion: A performance for all senses
MARY MAGDALEN - Where do we hear her voice? invites you to reconsider a familiar religious figure and encounter her with all your senses. Those who engage with a calm, visually powerful, and sound-conscious staging will experience a special evening between art, spirituality, and contemporary stage performance on October 24, 2026, in Freising.
