Asam Building Freising | Tour & Renovation
The Asam Building Freising is one of the defining structures of the old town and is today much more than just a historical monument. The baroque four-wing ensemble at Marienplatz combines city history, culture, theater, museum, ticket sales, and encounters in one place. Those searching for Asam Building Freising photos, Asam Building Freising address, Asam Building Freising tours, or Asam Building Freising renovation are often looking for not just a sight, but a vibrant house with real utility for visitors. This is exactly what the Asam Building offers after its comprehensive general renovation: a representative courtyard, the modernized Asam foyer, the traditional Asamsaal, the city museum on the first floor, the tourist information, and further uses in the south and north wings. The city describes the building today as a cultural center and meeting place; since its reopening in 2024, it has once again become a central attraction in the heart of Freising. The house is also well set up for events, as the schedule for 2025/26 includes more than 80 dates and clearly shows that not only the past is showcased here, but the present is being shaped. History, Renovation, and Reopening of the Asam Building
The history of the Asam Building reaches deep into Freising's city and educational history. According to the city, the baroque four-wing complex was built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries; traces can even be found in the building stock that date back to the 14th century. Until the early 19th century, the monument served as a church college and high school. The current Asamsaal was originally intended as the auditorium of the former prince-bishop's high school and received its baroque splendor, among other things, through the ceiling paintings by Georg Asam and the stucco by Nikolaus Liechtenfurtner. In 1949, the room was converted into a festive hall and later also used for theater and light shows; in 1976, a fundamental redesign of the theater environment followed, with a secured ceiling, restored ceiling paintings, an expanded stage house, and a larger foyer. Thus, the house is an example of how a historical building has been continuously adapted to current needs over generations without losing its character. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
The significant turning point in recent history began on April 12, 2017, when the first comprehensive general renovation in the history of the more than 300-year-old building started. The city initially spoke of a reliable cost estimate of 46.4 million euros for the building with a courtyard; later, the project was reported in official documents to be around 65 million euros. The renovation was not only a monument preservation task but also a functional reorganization: the west wing was opened to the courtyard, a large foyer with tourist information, theater box office, and cloakroom was created, the city museum received significantly more space, the Asamsaal was technically modernized and supplemented with a flexibly usable orchestra stage, and a small event hall was added on the second floor. By summer 2024, the comprehensive renovation was completed, the city museum was newly opened on July 20, 2024, and the building presented itself again as a modern cultural and civic center. The city also emphasizes that accessibility has been significantly improved while the historical substance has been carefully restored. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/rathaus/online-dabei/sanierung-asamgebaeude/))
The outdoor spaces were also rethought. The southern square has become a true part of the event concept and is now called “Asam open yourself.” The special feature is that the new freight elevator can be used as a foldable stage, creating an additional outdoor performance venue. The city highlights that a previously neglected backyard has been transformed into an attractive space for culture and encounters. As part of this redesign, a new elevator building with artistically designed metal facade was created, which has even been awarded. This combination of monument protection, modern functionality, and design ambition is an important part of what makes the Asam Building so special today. Those interested in Asam Building Freising renovation or Asam Building Freising opening will find here not just a mere restoration project, but the story of a comprehensive renewal that has visibly enhanced Freising's city center, its cultural life, and its identity. Tours, Tickets, and Program at ASAM
The Asam Building is once again a place with a dense program and clear points of contact for guests. The city's official cultural page refers to the ASAM season brochure 2025/26 under the motto “It’s just a matter of courage” and lists more than 80 events for this period. The spectrum ranges from theater and music to dance and special encounter formats. Those looking for tickets can find the ticket sales of the city of Freising directly at ASAM at Marienplatz 7; access is via the courtyard of the building. The opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This information is important for all those searching for Asam Building Freising tickets, Asam Building Freising program, or Asam Building Freising opening hours, as the house can not only be visited but actively experienced. The possibility of renting rooms such as Asamsaal, Small Hall, or Asam foyer also shows that the building has become an open cultural house for very different user groups again. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
There are several access points for tours. The city museum offers public tours, including the classic tour, changing theme tours, and special dates for the special exhibition. The tourism page of the city also describes a tour of the Asam family in Freising, which includes a visit to the Asamsaal of the former lyceum. Particularly interesting for visitors is the ongoing special exhibition “With all senses – The history of the Asam Building,” which makes the house itself the subject. Its narrative spans from the early construction phases to the general renovation from 2017 to 2024 and shows how closely architecture, use, and city identity are intertwined here. For a specific date, such as the tour on June 2, 2026, pre-registration is required. So, those looking for Asam Building Freising tours will find not only a tour in the classical sense but a whole chain of educational offerings that stage the house as a lively learning and cultural place. ([tourismus.freising.de](https://tourismus.freising.de/media/user_upload/41_Kultur_Tourismus/4110_pdf-Files/Kultur/Veranstaltungsprogramm/freising-kulturprogramm-januar-bis-juni-2026.pdf))
The current event life is also remarkable. In 2025, the city held a cultural reception for the first time in the reopened ASAM and described the foyer as a well-filled place for exchange and recognition. Further reports make it clear that the house is used for concerts, theater, dance evenings, and special formats. So, those looking for not just a sight but an active event center will find here a very good mix of tradition and present. Particularly important for the keyword combination Asam Building Freising tickets and Asam Building Freising program is to know that tickets are organized through the city’s advance sales and that the building offers a wide range of formats throughout the year. For the visitor, this means: The Asam Building is not limited to a one-time tour but functions as a cultural calendar of the city. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm))
Catering, Bistro, and Café in the Asam Building
In many inquiries regarding Asam Building Freising restaurant, Asam Building Freising catering, or Asam Building Freising café, the main question is whether one can combine the visit with a break, a drink, or a small snack. The official information from the city provides a fairly clear but nuanced answer: In the south wing of the historic ensemble, a bistro has been established for the first time, which also has outdoor areas in the courtyard and on the southern square for catering. At the same time, a generous event and meeting character is emphasized on the cultural page, which goes beyond mere gastronomy. This means: the building is not simply a place to eat, but it offers opportunities to combine a visit with catering. So, those searching for a café in the Asam Building should know that the city primarily highlights the bistro and event-related catering, but not a classic permanent café as a standalone brand or separate establishment. For visitors, this is an important distinction because the search intent often stems from the question of a cozy break in the house. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
An additional gastronomic aspect is reflected in the event life itself. At ASAM dances, the dance tea offering for the 60-plus generation, guests can indulge in coffee and cake during breaks in the beautiful Asam foyer. This is not just a nice detail but also an indication that the house explicitly considers encounters and stays. The gastronomy in the Asam Building is therefore more than just a secondary function; it complements culture, museum, and events into a complete visit that allows for relaxed breaks. This also fits with the urban planning role of the building: the city aims to increase the quality of stay in the center with the redesign of the city center and the Asam Building. So, those searching for Asam Building Freising gastronomy or Asam Building Freising café should not only focus on a single gastronomic unit but on the interplay of bistro, event catering, courtyard, and southern square. This makes the location attractive for people who want to combine culture and culinary breaks. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
The house is also well prepared for possible catering at events. The official page for renting the Asam points out that Asamsaal, Small Hall, and Asam foyer are available for events and that for questions regarding event technology or rental, the cultural office can be contacted. This is interesting for organizers because gastronomy in the broader sense is not considered a separate side business here, but as part of a functioning event location. Visitors benefit from the fact that the house not only provides culture but also quality of stay and service. Thus, the historical building becomes a place where one wants to stay longer. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam/asam-mieten))
Address, Access, Parking, and Accessibility
The central address of the house is simple: Asam Building Freising, Marienplatz 7, 85354 Freising. This is also where the ticket sales of the city of Freising are located in ASAM, with access via the courtyard of the building. The tourist information is also located at ASAM, Marienplatz 7. For inquiries such as Asam Building Freising address, this is the most important information, as it explains why the house is so closely connected to the heart of the old town. At the same time, the location at Marienplatz shows that the building is one of the places that can be ideally combined with a stroll through the old town. Those traveling by train or on foot can reach the ensemble very centrally; those arriving by car can find information on parking options in the vicinity of the old town on the city’s pages. This combination of central location and good visitor service is a significant advantage of the house. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
Regarding the topic of Asam Building Freising parking, the city refers to a PDF overview of parking spaces for cars, buses, and people with disabilities in the larger vicinity of the old town. Additionally, it is mentioned on the page regarding renovation and rental that up to 3500 parking spaces are accessible on foot within five minutes. For visitors, this means: One does not have to park directly at the building but can resort to the well-developed infrastructure of the city center. This is particularly sensible because Marienplatz itself is heavily influenced by pedestrian traffic and the building is intended as a culture- and visitor-friendly place. So, those traveling with multiple people or planning an event visit can organize their arrival in advance. There is also a separate overview for buses and accessible spaces according to the city. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
With regard to accessibility, the Asam Building sets new standards after the general renovation. The city informs that the ticket sales with day and evening box office on the ground floor as well as the Asamsaal are barrier-free accessible. Four wheelchair spaces are available in the parquet of the Asamsaal, two on each side. Access to the hall and foyer is via an elevator on the ground floor at the large staircase at the east entrance. Additionally, there is an inductive hearing system to which hearing aids with integrated receivers can be connected; those without a corresponding hearing aid can borrow a wireless receiver with headphones for a deposit. This information is relevant for all those searching for Asam Building Freising accessibility, as not only is a historical building made accessible, but a modern event operation is also enabled. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
The tourist information in the building is also practically designed: It is open on weekdays, offers current information on tours and cultural events, and sells tickets for Freising as well as tickets for additional offers as a partner of Reservix and Munich Ticket. The combination of tourist information, ticket sales, barrier-free access, and central location makes the Asam Building a very low-threshold starting point for visiting the old town. So, whether one wants to attend an event, discover the city museum, or simply experience the architecture, one receives a good infrastructure right on site. ([tourismus.freising.de](https://tourismus.freising.de/en/service/tourist-information))
Photos, Architecture, and Special Details
Those searching for Asam Building Freising photos will find numerous image galleries on the official city pages that show the building from different perspectives. These include views of the baroque courtyard, the entrance gate, the expanded Asam foyer, the Asamsaal with a view towards the gallery, and the night view of the courtyard. The reopening page even features its own photo gallery for the opening weekend. This visual world is not just decorative but helps to understand the spatial quality of the ensemble. The architecture of the building thrives on the interplay between representative and functional spaces: courtyard, foyer, staircase, museum levels, hall, and southern square form a sequence that guides visitors step by step through the house. Those who want to explore the building in their minds beforehand will therefore benefit greatly from the image galleries on the official pages. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/rathaus/online-dabei/ein-kulturzentrum-der-extraklasse?utm_source=openai))
Architecturally, it is particularly exciting how consistently historical substance and new interventions have been brought together. The west wing opens fully to the courtyard, the new wide staircase leads to the city museum, and on the second floor, the expanded foyer connects the path to the Asamsaal. The original ceiling paintings and stucco have been restored, the seating rows and sight lines in the hall have been improved, and the technology has been brought up to a contemporary standard. In the outdoor area, the new elevator tower with its artistically designed metal facade sets a clear contemporary accent. This facade was awarded the German Metal Construction Prize in 2025, which shows that not only the monument preservation but also the quality of the new architectural element has been recognized. For those searching for Asam Building Freising photos or Asam Building Freising renovation, this is interesting because the building today has a striking effect precisely due to the contrast between baroque substance and new precision. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
Among the special details is also the southern square with the open-air stage “Asam open yourself,” which expands the site with an additional performance and stay dimension. The interplay of courtyard, open-air stage, and historical hall makes the Asam Building a versatile event location. The city also emphasizes that the gallery is arranged in an ascending manner, so there is a good view from many places. This is important for visitors who want to assess not only the architecture but also the quality of use. Especially when searching for special impressions, impressive facades, or the character of the house, it becomes clear: This building is not museum-like frozen but lives from its versatile, carefully renewed architecture. ([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
City Museum, Exhibitions, and Visitor Experience
A central part of the current Asam Building is the City Museum Freising, which is located on the first floor of the house. According to the city, the exhibition area covers around 800 square meters; prehistoric finds, precious art and craft objects, and significant documents of recent city history are displayed. In addition, there is a graphics cabinet with “Freising on paper,” a dedicated room for the building and usage history of the house, modern media stations, separate rooms for special exhibitions and museum educational offerings, and a museum shop. For all those searching for City Museum Freising Asam Building or Asam Building Freising costs, it is particularly relevant: Admission costs 4 euros, reduced 2 euros, children and young people up to 18 years have free admission, and admission is also free on Tuesdays. The museum is barrier-free accessible and thus offers a very good introduction to Freising's city history. ([tourismus.freising.de](https://tourismus.freising.de/media/user_upload/41_Kultur_Tourismus/4110_pdf-Files/Kultur/Veranstaltungsprogramm/freising-kulturprogramm-januar-bis-juni-2026.pdf))
The visitor experience is deliberately designed to be varied. The official museum page mentions both classic tours and changing theme tours and special exhibitions. The new special exhibition “With all senses – The history of the Asam Building” makes the house's history itself the subject and shows the development from the first construction measures in 1688 to the most recent general renovation from 2017 to 2024. It is not only about architecture but also about uses, upheavals, and the role of the house in the city. This is important for people searching for Asam Building Freising tours or Asam Building Freising history, as the past of the building is not told abstractly but made tangible through concrete objects, plans, and experience stations. For the vernissage and for individual tours, there are registration options through the city museum. ([tourismus.freising.de](https://tourismus.freising.de/unsere-tipps/detail/mit-allen-sinnen-die-geschichte-des-asamgebaeudes))
The recent development of the museum is also remarkable. The museum was closed during the general renovation from March 2017 to July 2024 and was ceremoniously reopened on July 20, 2024, in the freshly renovated rooms. Thus, the Asam Building today is not only the backdrop of the museum but is itself part of the exhibition narrative. This is what makes the visit so attractive: The rooms tell history, and the exhibition explains the rooms. So, those looking for not just an address but a content-rich place where city history, building history, and present converge will find the Asam Building a particularly good starting point. This applies equally to families, culture enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and travelers who want to spend their time in Freising meaningfully and vividly.
([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
([freising.de](https://www.freising.de/kultur-freizeit/kulturprogramm/asam))
Among the special details is also the southern square with the open-air stage “Asam open yourself,” which expands the site with an additional performance and stay dimension. Lovely building. There is a fantastic wine bar that faces Marienplatz. Beware the restaurant in the inner courtyard. Some of the staff wearing lederhosen are extremely rude.

The Asam building is accessible again! The tourist office, local museum, and part of the gastronomy invite you to a lovely experience. Many different cultural events are offered in the hall, and there is a separate program for this. The long wait was worth it, as a guest I enjoy Freising's hospitality several times a year and have witnessed the overall positive development in the old town. Alongside the redesign of the city center, now the restored Asam building, another gem in the anniversary year. A vacation or even a day visit is worth it here.

We spontaneously set off to Pellmaier's Passion at the Asam Theater. Beautiful event hall in the heart of the old town with a great annual program. The head of the cultural office, Mr. Bader, was there himself and charmingly took care of the guests. A lovely place with a personal atmosphere, thank you Freising.
