The venue at Vöttinger Straße 40 combines the relaxed atmosphere of a campus bistro with the reliability of fixed opening hours: Monday to Friday 11:00 AM–6:00 PM, Saturday 11:00 AM–4:00 PM, Sunday closed. Since the reopening under new ownership, LACANTO has been presenting a weekly changing menu and uncomplicated service – open not only for students and employees but explicitly for all guests from Freising and the surrounding area. Thanks to its location at the scientific site of Weihenstephan, the venue is easily accessible, whether on foot, by bike, or by city buses from Freising train station. In addition to its kitchen performance, LACANTO scores with a vibrant cultural calendar: Under the label Lacanto Live, small, carefully curated concerts in cooperation with regional cultural actors take place regularly. Thus, the lunch and coffee break quickly becomes a place for discoveries – both culinary and cultural.
Opening Hours, Address, and Location on the Weihenstephan Campus
Those wishing to visit LACANTO will find it at the address Vöttinger Straße 40, 85354 Freising – centrally located on the Weihenstephan campus. The surroundings are characterized by institutes, lecture halls, laboratories, and green spaces, offering a unique mix of urban lifestyle and campus tranquility. The official communication of the establishment is clear and reliable: Open Monday to Friday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM; the venue is closed on Sundays. These times are ideal for lunch breaks, a late afternoon coffee, or an early, relaxed meal on Saturday. The location on campus means short distances for students and staff, but LACANTO is also easily accessible for visitors from the city. The proximity to the campus offers additional advantages: Those attending an event or appointment at one of the universities – TUM School of Life Sciences or HSWT – can conveniently plan a visit to LACANTO, whether for a quick snack or a meeting with colleagues, friends, or family. The atmosphere is casual, friendly, and open, fitting the concept: Creative Food, cool drinks, and coffee for a relaxed time. Furthermore, the gastronomic offer is oriented towards seasonal impulses; the weekly changing menu makes it easy to try something new again and again. Due to its campus location, peak times during lunch are possible; those who are flexible often find particularly quiet periods in the early afternoon for longer conversations or focused work over a coffee. The combination of clear opening hours, easily findable address, and campus-close infrastructure makes LACANTO a reliable fixture on the Weihenstephan hill.
Directions and Parking: How to Easily Reach LACANTO
For travel by public transport, it is recommended to take the train to Freising station and then switch to the city buses to the Weihenstephan campus. Particularly relevant are lines 638 (frequent service, more frequent on weekdays) and 639; nearby stops include Weihenstephan, Weihenstephaner Berg, and Am Staudengarten. From there, it is just a few minutes' walk to Vöttinger Straße 40. Those coming by bike benefit from the campus-wide cycling infrastructure and short distances between the institute buildings. Driving by car is also possible, but parking on campus is naturally limited. The rule is: park only in designated areas and pay attention to signage. The parking areas along Gregor-Mendel-Straße and at Weihenstephaner Berg have proven to be useful – depending on occupancy. Both zones are within walking distance of the campus and also connect to Vöttinger Straße. Additionally, the city of Freising provides information about its general parking offerings and parking management, including time restrictions in certain street areas. It is advisable to use public transport during peak times (semester start, trade fair days, larger events in Weihenstephan). Those who still come by car should plan a few extra minutes for parking search and only use designated parking spaces. Tip for visitors from outside: The route from B11 towards Weihenstephan is well signposted; follow the signs for Campus Weihenstephan or Vöttinger Straße in Freising. For those unfamiliar with the area, the short walking distances from the campus stops usually lead past well-known facilities. This way, a visit to LACANTO can be easily combined with errands on campus, walks through the green spaces, or a detour to the surrounding gardens and institutes.
Menu, Weekly Menu, and Concept: Creative Food, Coffee, and Relaxed Break
The culinary concept of LACANTO is intentionally kept uncomplicated and focuses on freshness, variety, and creative combinations. The weekly changing menu ensures that regular guests discover something new regularly, and first-time visitors get a good impression of what currently inspires the kitchen. The mix of Creative Food, classics, and seasonal accents is excellent for a quick yet high-quality lunch break as well as for a cozy meeting over coffee and cake. The offer is complemented by cool drinks that ideally accompany light dishes depending on the season. As a campus meeting point, the orientation of the range aligns with the daily rhythms of a university location: hearty meals at lunchtime, sweets and coffee in the afternoon, along with uncomplicated bowls, salads, or small warm dishes that can also be enjoyed between lectures or appointments. With fixed opening hours until 6 PM on weekdays and Saturday openings, LACANTO is also suitable for an early dinner or the start of a cultural evening when Lacanto Live is on the program. The service understanding is oriented towards short distances and friendly communication; those who wish can inform themselves online in advance about the current weekly menu. The campus location also favors many guests arriving on foot and using the terrace for a break in the fresh air. Thus, LACANTO is not just a supply facility but a real place of encounter: for project groups, colleague circles, families, visitors of the universities, and culture enthusiasts. The combination of creative cuisine, coffee craftsmanship, and an open, calm atmosphere makes the charm of the establishment – an uncomplicated place that still values quality.
Events and Program: Lacanto Live Brings Music to Weihenstephan
In addition to gastronomy, LACANTO has also established itself as a small, fine stage. Under the title Lacanto Live, the establishment cooperates with regional cultural partners, particularly with the music school and cultural initiative 3klang gGmbH. This leads to evenings with jazz, world music, classical crossover, and singer-songwriter programs that enrich the campus with a cultural facet. Concrete examples from the official cultural program of the city of Freising illustrate this line: On Thursday, 05.02.2026, a film-music evening titled Jane Knieper meets Charlie Chaplin was announced at LACANTO – with free admission. For Thursday, 05.03.2026, Lacanto Live: Safado Samba was scheduled; partly with admission (discounted conditions possible). Other formats such as band evenings with regional groups also regularly appear in municipal event overviews. The beauty of it: The events are small-scale, approachable, and fit the relaxed character of the establishment. Reservations are often recommended, especially for concerts or special events; the email of the establishment serves as a contact. In some programs, a telephone reservation option has also been mentioned – depending on the event. For guests, this means: First eat, then culture – or vice versa. With reliable opening hours in the early evening, culinary and cultural program points can be easily combined. Those who want to stay informed can check the cultural calendars of the city of Freising, follow 3klang, and the channels of LACANTO. This way, one can plan in time whether to reserve a table for an evening with friends or drop by spontaneously. The campus thus becomes a place where work, study, culinary arts, and music come together – uncomplicated, approachable, and with clear information on times, location, and access.
Outdoor Area, Terrace, and Atmosphere: Campus Flair with Beer Garden Character
A special flair of LACANTO includes the outdoor area: In the warm months, the terrace expands the indoor seating and conveys a real campus summer feeling. Various directories and reports list LACANTO as a restaurant & beer garden; at the same time, the regional press mentions the summery character of the seating options on campus. For guests, this means: eating outdoors, drinking coffee, or waiting for entry to the event – relaxed, green, and without haste. The outdoor area is pragmatically utilized: uncomplicated ordering processes, short distances, and an ambiance that is suitable for longer conversations as well as a quick break between two appointments. Those coming with children appreciate the open paths and the quiet location away from heavily trafficked roads, while culture enthusiasts like to use the terrace as a meeting point before the concert. Throughout the day, the mood changes: lively at noon, quieter in the late afternoon – ideal for focused work or reading over a cup of coffee. The outdoor area combines the best of both worlds: the structure of a planned campus with the casualness of a beer garden. In summary, it creates a place where one enjoys staying – whether for a bowl, an espresso, or a music evening. Also practical: Due to the campus location, the paths are illuminated and orientation is easy, which makes arriving and leaving easier, especially in the darker season. Thus, the terrace of LACANTO becomes a seasonal plus point that underscores the orientation of the establishment – relaxed, creative, open.
Contact, Reservation, and Practical Tips for Your Visit
For inquiries and reservations, the contact address info@lacanto.de is available. This email is listed on the LACANTO website and is used for both general inquiries and applications. For individual cultural events, reservation information has also been published in official programs; there, email and sometimes telephone contact options may have been mentioned. It is advisable to secure a table, especially for Lacanto Live evenings, as the number of seats in a bistro setting can be limited. Those who come spontaneously usually have good chances outside of lunchtime – especially in the late afternoon. Timing is aided by checking the opening hours: Mon–Fri 11:00 AM–6:00 PM, Sat 11:00 AM–4:00 PM, Sun closed. For arrival: Take the bus (638/639) from Freising station to the campus, get off at the stops Weihenstephan, Weihenstephaner Berg, or Am Staudengarten, and walk to Vöttinger Straße 40. Those using LACANTO as a meeting point for project or team meetings benefit from the calm, factual atmosphere and reliable kitchen performance. It’s a dream cafe. Amazing staff, healthy food, insanely clean. Such nice vibes. The toilet has its own soothing music which makes the experience very pleasant. Vegan options are available both for food and coffee. Highly recommended.

Freising's ray of hope! A progressive concept with mostly sustainable, high quality food makes for a breath of fresh air to the usual tired offering in the town centre. Hope they eventually become popular enough to open on a Saturday. Thanks Lacanto I already love you. 🥰

I really like this place. But please update the opening hours on google maps. There have been lots of times when we get there and it was closed without any notices.
